Your First Visit
Once we receive a referral letter from your GP or consultant, you can look forward to your initial appointment, generally within seven to fourteen days.
Your initial appointment is important as it helps set the agenda for your treatment programme. For most couples the initial consultation includes a semen analysis as this can indicate a number of infertility causes and may let us move directly to specific treatments. This saves time and can eliminate a number of other tests at a later stage and because it is a fixed price it appeals to many couples as an excellent investment in first-stage analysis.
At the initial consultation we will look at the medical and fertility history of you and your partner; the male partner may be asked to provide a semen sample at the beginning of the consultation so that the results are available for discussion with the doctor. The female partner will have a physical examination and in some cases the male partner may also be examined.
This examination and the semen analysis may help to identify the underling problem and provide firm guidelines as to the most appropriate treatment, although this is not always the case.
In all cases your first visit will result in a formal assessment, as required by the HFEA. This will enable us to recommend appropriate tests and treatments, define the nature of that treatment and its cost. We will also give you our opinion of the likelihood of success.
Please look at the treatments menu for an explanation of the treatments that are available for a variety of infertility causes.
